Lake Garda 3-Day Road Trip Guide

I live just a 30-minute drive from the lake, and it is one of our favorite weekend destinations. So, town after town, hike after hike, I have put together this ultimate Lake Garda road trip guide. This 3-day itinerary can easily be shortened into a weekend trip. There are so many things to see; I have selected the must-visit destinations and a few hidden gems. The route is about 170 kilometers long and touches the three regions facing the water: Lombardy, Trentino, and Veneto.

Day 1: Peschiera del Garda, Sirmione, Tremosine – Lake Garda road trip

Peschiera del Garda

Our 3-day Lake Garda itinerary begins in Peschiera del Garda. I chose it as the first stop because it is one of the easiest towns to reach: here you will find the highway exit on the A4 Motorway and the train station on the Milan-Venice line.

Among the things to see in Peschiera del Garda are the historic center enclosed by the Venetian walls, the small squares overlooking the canals, and the parish church of San Martino.

Since 2017, the fortress of Peschiera del Garda has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage, within the serial site of the Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th centuries.

Sirmione

From the Veneto shore, we move to the Lombardy side and stop in Sirmione. It cannot be missed in a 3-day Lake Garda itinerary: this village sits on a thin peninsula that stretches into the lake for about four kilometers and is one of the most suggestive locations on Garda.

Among the things to see in Sirmione, the Scaliger Castle of Sirmione stands out; it is one of the best-preserved castles in Italy, completely surrounded by the lake waters and built in the second half of the 14th century.

Another must-see attraction is the Grottoes of Catullus. In a splendid panoramic position lie the remains of a large Roman villa, known by this name for centuries even though it is not certain that it belonged to the poet Catullus.

Strolling through the historic center, you will find alleys full of shops and restaurants overlooking the lake, with very photographed views, especially during the bougainvillea bloom.

Tremosine

In the late afternoon, we get in the car towards Tremosine, where we will stay. One of the most spectacular views over Lake Garda awaits us, but first, we must cross the famous Strada della Forra (Gorge Road) which climbs from the Gardesana state road and leads to Tremosine.

2026 Update: The Strada della Forra is currently accessible with a one-way system uphill in the section between the Gardesana and the La Forra restaurant. The village of Campione, by the lake, can be reached as always along the Gardesana road. (this is the latest update from the website www.stradadellaforra.com).

Tremosine belongs to the prestigious “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy” club. It is a scattered municipality, as it is composed of 18 hamlets, inhabited by just over 2000 people. The main hamlet of the municipality, Pieve, rises sheer above Lake Garda at an altitude of 350 meters and will offer you a breathtaking view that stretches from the Veronese coast to Monte Baldo and Campione sun Garda.

If during the day it offers wonderful views over the Lake, in the evening it is pleasant to stroll through its narrow, illuminated streets.

Day 2: Limone sul Garda, Riva del Garda, and Torbole

Limone sul Garda

We begin the second day in Limone sul Garda, about 10 kilometers from Tremosine. We treat ourselves to a walk through the streets of the center and along the lakeside promenade, but our main purpose is to travel along the cycling and walking path on Garda.

The cycling and walking path is 2.5 kilometers long, 5 kilometers round trip. It runs along Lake Garda sheer over the water and reaches the border with Trentino.

If you decide to walk it, as we did, it is best to try to find parking near the cycle path. Beware that parking spaces are very few.

If you decide to bike it, it is necessary to park in Limone and rent bicycles on site. Calculate about 2 hours to cover the 10 kilometers to go from Limone sul Garda to the end of the suspended cycle path and return to Limone.

Riva del Garda

We drive 10 kilometers and arrive in Riva del Garda, another unmissable stop on the three-day tour of Lake Garda. It is located on the tip of the Trentino shore of Lake Garda. Due to its mild climate, it is very popular among sports enthusiasts, especially trekking and bicycle lovers. The winds that blow constantly all year round are an attraction for sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts from all over Europe.

The view of the lake, the lakeside walk, and the small bridge you cross to get to the small beaches are, for me, the essence of Riva. Everything is on a human scale.

Day 3: Malcesine, Bardolino, Garda

What to see in Malcesine

We dedicate the last morning to Malcesine. To visit are the Scaliger castle, considered the symbol of Malcesine, and the historic center. We recommend Cassone, which is only 4 kilometers away. The village offers a very suggestive small harbor and a pleasant lakeside walk. A curiosity: it is crossed by the Aril river, just 175 meters long, which is the shortest river in the world.

Walk from Bardolino to Garda

To conclude these 3 days, you can take one of the most beautiful walks on Garda, the one from Bardolino to Garda. Eight kilometers in total (round trip) that you can shorten or lengthen as you wish.

Where to sleep at Lake Garda

To best enjoy your road trip around Lake Garda, it is useful to choose a convenient accommodation close to the villages you will visit. For this 3-day itinerary, we highly recommend spending your first night around the Tremosine area to enjoy the evening views, and your second night on the northern or eastern shore to be close to the final stops of the tour.

How to get around on your Lake Garda road trip

Getting around Lake Garda is easy, but the choice of transport depends on the type of experience you want to live.

By car: the most comfortable way to visit hidden villages, beaches, and viewpoints. You can move from Peschiera to Malcesine, Sirmione, or Riva del Garda without haste, enjoying the panoramic roads. Practical tip: if you do not have a car available, you can easily rent a vehicle with Discover Cars, so you can explore the lake with freedom and according to your own timing.

Other means: ferries connect the main ports, perfect for a trip on the lake. For the more sporty, bikes and pedestrian paths allow you to discover the shores and the quietest villages in a sustainable way.

Best time to visit Lake Garda

If you want to fully enjoy the villages, walks, and panoramic excursions on Lake Garda, spring and summer are the ideal periods. Personally, I prefer spring: temperatures are cooler, the villages are less crowded, and the traffic to reach the lake is reduced. In summer, on the other hand, it is nice to participate in local events and evening festivals, taking advantage of the long days. In autumn and winter, even if the days are shorter, the climate remains mild: a walk through the small villages of the lake is always a good idea and offers quiet atmospheres and suggestive views.
